usain bolt has just broken the world record. again. well at least he ran the whole thing, instead of celebrating like halfway through, though i'm certain he would have broken the world record ANYWAY, and thrashed gay like nobody's business ANYWAY.
just saw chengxiang the other day. he, erm, grew up quite a bit. i remember 2 years back, when i was 15, he was below my shoulder. now, when he's 15, he's nearly looking at me eye-to-eye. thank goodness its only nearly, or i might have cried there and then. time really flies, when chengxiang grows, steve has a deep voice, and they don't seem so cute anymore.
oh the epl has finally started!!! i watched 3 games over the weekend, got to cut down with promos coming and everything, but it sure was good lying on the crouch watching it on tv, courtesy of starhub's free screening on its preview channel. man utd's game was actually quite boring. credit to birmingham, they were tight at the back, and chucho (how's that remotedly related to christian benitez, nobody knows) posed a few problems when he came on. man utd seem to lack penetration, even with 2 wingers on each flank (evra and nani on the left, fabio and valencia on the right). and fabio cannot defend for nuts. he just looks cute, would probably be cuter when he and rafael finally displace evra, but the both of them cannot defend. any top-half team would rape them, so i shudder to imagine what would happen when they face the might of the spanish teams.
owen missed a glaring chance in the last kick of the game, and he has really lost that pace of his when he first burst onto the scene as an 18-year old. watching him run was rather laborious. nevertheless, he still has the same brain, instincts, and ability to run off the shoulder of the last defender, something man utd lacked since the departure of van Nistelrooij. getting 10 odd goals shouldn't be a problem at all.
things for me has changed somewhat. i should be more careful with what i say here, lest i hurt those with fragile emotions. lets just say im a very different person in class as compared to out of it. i don't think i'm being pretentious or anything of the sort, and there's no way it would be perceived as such, but circumstances change, and as humans we adapt to these changes. (its actually uncharacteristic of humans to do so, for we do more of adapting our surroundings to ourselves than the other way round, but that's a moot point). i feel more distant than ever, and while i would so rather be in orbit than wandering aimlessly in space, ungravitated to any sort of entity, it would not be an issue if i do not perceive it to be an issue. this smacks of self-delusion, but it is really all about perspectives and the changing of our own worldview.
very often i used to wonder how so-and-so can live with him/herself being so fat, ugly, unfit, cannot play sports, (insert flaw). sure, we can change things like fitness by training, or our weight by watching what we eat, but how do we change our personality? the way we do, see and speak things? all these flaws are unchangeable in the short-term, and short of anything drastic, we would have to live with them at least in the short-run. so i found out what these people do, whether consciously, subconciously, or naturally, is that they do not perceive as problems what we perceive as problems. i am fat. so what? i cannot play football as well as you. does anyone care?
its usually the case that they have gotten used to the problem to no longer regard it an issue. but this is rather defeatist; they still regard it as an issue, just that they are numbed to the sorrow and sadness that it accompanies. i would so rather myself change the way i see the world and as such am genuinely happy with the way i am rather than get numbed to the fact that i am inadequate in comparison to the societal standards that i place upon myself. when you play a game and lose regardless of how hard you try, there are 2 ways to counter this: either you change the rules, or you change the game.
it is important to stick and emphasize your strengths rather than be self-critical of your weaknesses. hide your weaknesses, or rather, don't draw emphasis to it. if you cannot cross with your left foot then don't try at all. it is really a rather level-playing field. everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. whoever triumphs at the end of the day, regardless of whether it is a game of football or in relationship powerplays, is the one who is able to utilise and focus on his strengths most effectively, and hide his weaknesses to the extent no one is able to take advantage of it. the balance of strengths and weaknesses in different people are different, and vastly in some aspects, but ultimately its all about how well we make use of them to our advantage.
look at gary neville. he made a career out of punting balls to nowhere, taking throw-ins, and pretending to look like he owns the place. that's all he's good at, that's all he does, and that's the difference between he and i.
